What they say
Sports and remedial massage

... "As a fitness instructor, I make sure that I regularly go for sports massages to help relieve tension.

Although I've seen several therapists in the past, the service from simply massage was by far the most thorough and professional.

I'll definitely be back."

Joanna Lloyd-Gane, Fitness Instructor, Cannons Health and Fitness

Sports and remedial massage is an effective and beneficial form of physical therapy, not only for active sports people, or those requiring therapy after a soft tissue injury, but also for those seeking relief from muscular tension or simply to maintain healthy muscles.

Sports and remedial massage is the skill of manipulating soft tissues of the body and isolating individual muscle groups using specific and specialised techniques including stroking, kneading and compressing.

Providing regular programmes of sports massage, such as pre-event and post-event massage, mobilisation and stretching can enhance the physical, physiological and psychological well being of active individuals.

BENEFITS AND WHAT TO EXPECT

One of the main benefits of sports massage is to help the athlete prevent injuries and loss of joint mobility by releasing muscle tension and restoring balance to the musculo-skeletal system.

Sports massage plays a major role in the athlete’s preparation before an event as it can improve performance and endurance by removing the build up of general aches and pains. It also stretches muscles, tendons and fascia which surround the muscles.

If injury occurs, sports massage enables a faster return to an activity because manipulation of the injured tissues help prevent adhesions forming by realigning scar tissue. Sports massage helps to relieve the tension and inflexibility caused by a build up of scar tissue in soft tissues such as muscles, tendons and ligaments.

Sports massage induces a relaxation and desensitisation of the muscle spindles that will lead to improved joint mobility, as well as lowering stress levels placed upon the body. It aids removal of waste products such as lactic acid, which builds up during and after vigorous exercise.

We have a duty of care to all clients and a consultation is always carried out at the beginning of the first appointment to establish the client’s medical history and lifestyle. The therapist discusses client’s diet, posture, exercise, allergies, work patterns and stress indicators. This helps the therapist to determine the most appropriate course of treatment.

It is important to let your massage therapist know if you have any medical problems such as skin allergies or conditions, problems with joints, a history of heart problems, or if you are / may be pregnant or have recently had surgery.

After the massage treatment, we recommend you do the following:

  • Drink plenty of water
  • Eat only light meal
  • Avoid alcohol
  • Keep warm
